Native American Cultural Center
The Native American Cultural Center (formerly Great Promise for American Indians) was founded in 1991, after Austin Native American members returned from the historic White House Conference on Native Americans. Since that time, the Native American Cultural Center has worked to connect the Native American community with the public, educational institutions, museums, government agencies and corporations for a more accurate understanding of both historical and modern Native American customs, traditions and lifestyles. Organized and incorporated in 1992, the Native American Cultural Center reaches beyond even state boundaries to find artists and ambassadors to carry out its mission.
Our Mission
The Native American Cultural Center is dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and advancing Native American traditions, heritage, and culture. We support Native youth and families through cultural programs, health, and community development. By honoring the wisdom of our ancestors, we strengthen our identity today and build a resilient future for generations to come.
We will achieve this mission by:
- Supporting programs that preserve the traditions, heritage and culture of all Native American people
- Dispelling myths about Native Americans, and educating the public about Native Americans and their many cultures
- Sponsoring and conducting the annual Austin Powwow and Native American Heritage Festival
- Supporting and promoting the activities of the Native American and Indigenous Education Program
- Supporting the health and education needs of Native American youth and their families
- Partnering with other groups and organizations that share our goals and values
